CompTIA Data+ (DA0-002): What the Exam Is and How to Beat It

CompTIA Data+ is a vendor-neutral certification for early-career data professionals — analysts, reporting specialists, operations staff who live in dashboards, and anyone whose job increasingly means turning raw records into decisions. The DA0-002 revision, current since October 2025, replaces DA0-001 and modernizes the blueprint for cloud platforms and AI-assisted analytics while keeping the core promise intact: prove you can acquire data, prepare it, analyze it, visualize it, and govern it responsibly.

The shape of the exam

You get up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, a mix of multiple-choice items and performance-based questions (PBQs), scored on a scale where 675 of 900 passes. That permits an average of roughly one minute per question if the form contains the maximum. Item length and difficulty vary, so use checkpoints, move past an item that is consuming disproportionate time, and preserve time to revisit flagged work when the interface permits it.

The blueprint divides into five weighted domains:

DomainWeight
D1 — Data Concepts and Environments20%
D2 — Data Acquisition and Preparation22%
D3 — Data Analysis24%
D4 — Visualization and Reporting20%
D5 — Data Governance14%

Two things follow from the weights. First, Data Analysis is the largest single domain, so statistical methods, communication choices, and analysis troubleshooting deserve proportionate study time. Second, no domain is small enough to skip. Governance still represents 14% of the published blueprint, and weaknesses there can erase gains from a stronger domain.

How DA0-002 differs from its predecessor

If you studied older DA0-001 material, familiar foundations such as queries, statistics, chart selection, data quality, and privacy still help. Use the DA0-002 V2 objectives as your source of truth, however: the current blueprint explicitly covers modern repositories and infrastructure, analytics tools, artificial intelligence concepts, communication approaches, troubleshooting, report validation, and quality assurance. AI-assisted work still requires verification against source data and accountable human review.

How the questions think

Many certification questions are easier to solve when you can apply a concept to a scenario rather than merely recite its definition. You may be given a customer table, an orders table, and a business requirement, then asked which query satisfies it. This has a study consequence: memorizing definitions is necessary but not sufficient. For every concept in the objectives, you should be able to answer the situational form of the question — not "what is stratified sampling" but "which sampling method guarantees small departments are represented."

Well-designed distractors often use an adjacent concept (HAVING when the answer is WHERE), a tempting but unsafe instinct (delete every outlier), or a technically true but irrelevant fact. When you are stuck, state the scenario's requirement in plain language and eliminate choices that solve a different problem.

A study plan that matches the weights

Work the domains in project order so the knowledge compounds. Concepts and environments (D1) establish the vocabulary, sources, infrastructure, tools, and AI foundations. Acquisition and preparation (D2) follows the data from collection through exploration and cleansing. Analysis (D3) connects communication, statistical methods, and troubleshooting. Visualization and reporting (D4) covers visual choices, delivery, and validation. Governance (D5) closes with management, compliance, privacy, protection, and quality assurance.

Drill with weighted mixes so your practice matches the real distribution, and track your accuracy per domain rather than overall. An 80% overall score that hides a 50% in Data Analysis signals a material gap in the heaviest domain — D3 alone is nearly a quarter of the published blueprint.

Exam-day mechanics

Do not leave answerable items blank. Flag-and-return beats stalling when the exam interface permits it. Read the final request in a long scenario early so you know which details matter. For calculations within the current objectives — such as measures of center and spread, percentiles, date arithmetic, or rounding — write the operation down before comparing choices. Use the current V2 blueprint to decide what belongs in your study scope.

The 18 objective lessons walk the complete course in blueprint order, while the supplemental essays revisit selected topics in more depth. Every practice item is tagged to the domain and objective it serves. Study the lesson, drill the objective, and review every explanation — including for questions you got right. Treat sustained accuracy above 85% as a conservative study target, not as an official score conversion.
